“Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Benjamin Franklin

If you spend any amount of time on the internet you see the truth in this. There are some people who take pleasure in seeing other people angry. These people are commonly refered to on the internet as “trolls”. Urbandictionary describes a troll as,
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument,”
 and,
One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. 'you're nothing but a fanboy' is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevance to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.”

Although These definitions help us to categorize someone as a troll they don't help us understand trolls. What are their motivations? Why do they do the things they do? Hours could be spent discussing such things and through these blog entries I intend to. I don't want to tell you whether trolls are good or bad rather educate on trolls in general.

It's hard to tell sometimes if someone is a troll. First off stupid people are not trolls. Although a troll and a stupid person may be both called stupid a troll is not inherently stupid. If someone you know says something incredibly stupid they could claim to be “trollin”, to troll or the verb form of troll when in fact they reside in the stupid category. Since the internet is so rampant with trolls, if you have a differing view point a lot of the time it's hard discuss it without being dismissed as a troll. I have extensively devout Roman Catholic friends who do this ALL the time. If someone says something to question their religion they dismiss them as being Satan trying to get them to react. It really annoys me. But who knows, maybe they are just trollin.

has nothing to do with trollin apart from the lyrics :)

  1. Daxx, are you sure you aren't trolling the class? ^_^

Good point, though, that the word "Troll" is often substituted for "non-conformist". I look forward to your analysis of the psyche of a troll, and strongly suggest that you take a couple amusing examples of trolling and attempt to psychoanalyze them.

  2. My first thought is "what is this I don't even ...".

With further reflection though, I now think "what is this I don't even ...". But I do like your background :)
